Přemysl Otakar II founded this royal town. The town flourished most during the reign of Charles IV who granted royal privileges to it. The most important of historic monuments are a Franciscan monastery, the town hall featuring a unique tower and the Church of the Elevation of the Holy Cross with valuable furnishings. The town also provides plentiful opportunities for sports activities. Every September an event known as Emperor's Day recalls the arrival of Emperor Charles IV in the town.
