The town of Kolín is located in the fertile lowland of the river Labe, at an ancient crossroads of important trade routes. The town boasts an eventful history and a rich culture life. Petr Parléř, the architect of St Vitus? Cathedral in Prague, completed the Gothic St Bartholomew?s Church in the latter half of the 13th century.
Jakub Krčín of Jelčany, a native of Kolín, achieved fame as the builder of lakes at the Rožmberk estate in Southern Bohemia. The conductor and composer František Kmoch founded a brass orchestra there, which enjoyed a great popularity in the second half of the 19th century. This tradition has survived to this day and the town regularly resounds with music within the framework of a festival of brass orchestras known as Kmoch's Kolín.
