This castle was built in the latter half of the 13th century. It was built by member of the Buzic family, the lords of Valdek. In 1336 the castle became royal property. The most important phase in the development of the castle came in the time of Vencel IV., who had it converted into a magnificent residence. King Vencel IV. was very fond of staying at Žebrák and did so often even after he had built a new splendid castle, Točník, on the upper end of rocky ridge.
The Hussite war had practically no effect on the castle, but it means its transfer into the hands of mortgage owners. From the end of the 15th century the interest of the owners of the castle shifted to Točník, which was more comfortable, and Žebrák began to be neglected. The process of its falling into decay was accelerated by a fire in 1532, after which it was described as desolate.
The huge round tower, which has illusive decoration and fulfils the function of an observation point, a dark dungeon, an old palace with a furnace, the torso of the imposing palace of Vencel IV., the beauty of the surrounding deep Křivoklát forests - such are the things, which the ruins of Žebrák Castle offer its visitors of the present.
