Lipno dam was built in the years 1950-59 as the first phase of Vltava cascade. Lipno Lake is the largest lake in Czech Republic and one of the most popular spots in Šumava Mountains. The Lipno area affords the opportunity to experience the untouched beauty of the countryside. It is perfect for all who enjoy an active holiday.

Spring and autumn around Lipno are ideal for anglers, mushrooms pickers and, of course, for keen walkers and trips of discovery. The summer season offers all sorts of water sports and especially sailing and windsurfing. The winter season is also full of opportunities. Tempting is skating on the frozen surface of the lake and for skiers the area is criss-crossed with good cross-country ski paths.

Technical data of the dam:
The rockfill dam with sealing core reinforced with steel caissons, with concrete overflow spillways and outflow, length 296 m, height 25 m, maximum volume of retained water 306 million cubical meters, the lake is 48 km long, the area is 4870 ha, maximal depth is 21,5 m. In the hydroelectric power station underground located in the well cavity in the rocky massive 160 m deep, there are two Francis turbines with output of 2 × 60 MW, water is supplied in two shafts with diameter 4,5 m, exploitable gradient reaches 161 m.
