Zoological and Botanical Garden is the only institution of its kind in West Bohemia. On 21,5 ha of its premises, the Garden keeps more than 2500 species representing around 550 species of vertebrates and about 150 species of invertebrates. The ZOO became famous among professional public with importing to Czech Republic the komodo dragons, the hugest reptiles of the world. The ZOO is also known for regular breeding of ocelots and snowy owls, spurred tortoises and other animals. The garden changes itself into a bio park divided into world zoogeographic areas.

Five large terrarium expositions are imitating different world areas. Two never used islands and other two new build ones are occupied by monkeys. A large outdoor enclosure of Australian area and also new outdoor enclosures for chimpanzees and macaques have been finished, also their indoor expositions were improved (bars were replaced by glass and tiles by artificial rocks). The ZOO started regular "talks" about animals for public together with regular feeding times of attractive animals.
Greenhouse was opened in the year 1993. There is a unique collection of succulent plants of three world areas - South Africa, Madagascar and Canary Islands. The areas are completed by terrariums with reptiles of presented areas.

Arboretum was opened in the year 1961. The arboretum consists of collection of trees and shrubs from the whole world, followed by a collection of about 50 cultivars of roses and small meadow with bulb plants.
AKVA-TERA is situated on Palace square 5, close to J.K.Tyl theatre and synagogue of Plzeň. It is divided to three parts - new display area, breeding background (closed for public) and so called Rescue Centre for cold blood animals confiscated to illegal owners and smugglers. New display area presents a few rooms covered by artificial rock, where visitors can see reptiles, amphibians, fish and invertebrates in smaller or larger mixed expositions imitating their natural biotopes. For example snakes, turtles, reptiles, frogs (including so called "arrow frogs"), butterflies, beetles, spiders, ants, crabs, mantids etc. There are also sea aquariums and expositions imitating rainforests or deserts.
