King Přemysl Otakar II of Bohemia founded the town of České Budějovice, located on the confluence of the rivers Vltava and Malše, in the year 1265. The town experienced its heyday in the 16th century when it thrived on silver mining and housed a royal mint. The 19th century ushered in an era of unprecedented development to the town, reflected in the construction of a horse-drawn railway leading from České Budějovice to Linz, the foundation of a factory for the production of world-renowned pencils by the Hardtmuth brothers and the building of two breweries - Samson and Budvar (Budweiser).

The Přemysl Otakar II Square, lined by Baroque burghers' houses and featuring the famous Samson Fountain in its centre, is one of the most beautiful in the Czech Republic. The town's dominate feature, the Black Tower that reaches to a height of 72 metres, served as a belfry in the past. There is another historical square, called Piarist, whose greatest attractions are the former armoury and the former Dominican monastery with the Church of the Sacrifice of the Virgin Mary dating from the year 1265.
