The town of Pilsen was founded in 1295 and the first reference to the existence of a brewery with a malthouse was recorded in 1307. The first brew of a Bavarian type, bottom fermented beer known as pale lager, was produced in the new Burgess Brewery in 1842. Thanks to the unique combination of the quality raw material and demanding brewing process, the pilsner beer got lot of fans very quickly. First pilsner beer was delivered in Prague the same year. 1st March, 1859 the ?Pilsner Bier? trademark was registered.

In 19th century the brewery expanded within Europe; the first shipments went from Pilsen to America. In1913 the output exceeded one million hectolitres of beer; the brewery had commercial agencies in 34 different countries. In 1933 two breweries existed in Pilsen. In 13th September, 1946 both breweries were nationalised. The single national enterprise Plzeňské pivovary was formed.

After 1999, the joint stock company Plzenske Pivovary (Pilsen Breweries) was created. Huge investments were made, technology progressed, sales volumes grew in this country and abroad, the sales and distribution network was formed and marketing was introduced. In 1999 the merger with Pivovar RADEGAST a.s. and Pivovar Velke Popovice a. s. was approved.
