The beginnings of the monastery as the oldest pilgrimage place of 14 Holy Helpers in the Czech lands are covered by a legend. Once a town place of execution is said to be situated in its place and a nobleman, who had conspired against the governor, should have been hanged there. When he was led to the hanging, he regretted his deed and apologized to God through Holy Helpers, his patrons. He did not only reach it but he was saved alive by a miracle. He had been hanging on the gallows for three days and nights but he did not die. Seeing such a miracle, the town councillors of Kadaň freed him, ordered to remove the place of execution to the other end of the town and built the chapel of Fourteen Holy Helpers in the place of the miracle.

The chapel is mentioned for the first time in 1470. In the eighties of the 15th century provisional buildings gave way to a final construction of a stone monastery. But this relatively small building of four wings surrounding a small courtyard had to be enlarged already in the 16th century because of the growing number of monks.

During the World War the Franciscans had to surrender one half of their buildings to Wehrmacht for Hitlerjugend needs. After the war a few years of relative peace returned, but in1950 the communist regime closed the male monasteries in Czechoslovakia. For long time the object was used as archives or a depository and it deteriorated because of insufficient basic maintenance. In 1991 it came back to the hands of Miner Brethren Rule - the Franciscans, who however lacked both financial means for its reconstruction and enough monks for the revival of regular community. The town undertook a very demanding and responsible task to restore all the area step by step and therefore a project for the preservation and the future use of monastery buildings and gardens was elaborated.
Historical and mineralogical exhibition of Municipal Museum was established in the older part of the monastery in May 1999. Kadaň Basic School of Arts started its activities in the area of the monastery in September 1999.
