Jihlava was the medieval mining town. It was shielded by strong walls which are partly extant, as well as the Gothic Gate of the Holy Mother of God. Gothic architecture is represented by the Church of St. James with two steeples of different height in its frontage, the Church of the Holy Cross and the Church of the Virgin Mary Assumption. The Jesuit Church of St. Ignatius is a work of master builders of Baroque period.

One of the largest Central European town squares is lined with Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque buildings. The most remarkable ones include Patrician's House, House of the Drapery Guild and a Gothic town hall with Renaissance and Baroque elements. Interconnected medieval cellars made underground labyrinth of tunnels with total length of 25 km.
