The town of Litomyšl, located on the river Loučná, is a cultural and historical centre whose origin can be traced back to the turn of the 11th century. The town's dominant feature is a chateau complex, which has been entered in the UNESCO List of World Cultural Heritage. The chateau complex contains a brewery where the famous Czech composer Bedřich Smetana was born in the year 1824. The town's glorious cultural tradition has been carried on by a lively cultural life, the highlight of which is an international opera festival entitled Smetana's Litomyšl. Since the year 1998 Litomyšl has been home to the Museum of Restoration and Historical Technologies, situated in the spaces of the so-called Red Tower.
